How great is that!
This ability has been rolled out quietly and to no fanfare despite the fact that not being able to do so is an issue which has engendered much anger and comments on this blog, in lists and on the Amazon forum.
There are lots of reasons to permanently delete books. Let me name a few:
You took advantage of a free book offer. The book was terrible.
You would like to share your Kindle account with your teenager or your grandmother and there are books in your account which might prove embarrassing or inappropriate.
You have read the book and will never read it again, nor will anyone in your family. Let it go.
The physical books I hang onto are those which, for whatever reason, I may refer to again—arts and crafts, computer manuals, poetry, spirituality, self-improvement, history, etc. This would include very little in the way of fiction. As one who reads well over 100 books a year, to keep everything I read, I would need to have a very big house and more bookshelves than I already do. And dusting them can become daunting. I don't have to dust the virtual books, but keeping titles I will never read again makes for a long and more confusing list to scroll through.
How to delete books permanently from your Kindle account:
Go to Amazon, click on My Account, sign in and scroll down to Manage Your Kindle. Toward the bottom of the page you will find a section called Your Orders. By default these will be listed chronologically with the latest order first. To change that to the earliest order first, click on the arrow under Order Date. Or you can sort them by title or author alphabetically with a few caveats: (1) It sorts by the author's first name (2) When sorting by title, it uses a, an, the as part of the title. Thus you will find The Blind Side with the Ts, not with the Bs. Nevertheless, you will be able to locate what you want to delete, one way or another.
Find the book you wish to delete and click on the plus sign before the title. This brings up a box with some options, one of which is Delete this Title. If you click that, it warns you that the deletion is permanent and should you want the book back, you will have to buy it again. If you still want to delete it, click OK. It takes a moment for the site to digest this and then you are back where you started with your latest purchase listed first. If you have a lot of books to delete this can become tedious, but liberating if this is something you have been wanting to do. For me it was.
While trying to delete books from their Kindle accounts, some have encountered problems which appear to be browser related. If you run into a problem, refresh your browser, or better yet, try Firefox. Many have said everything works fine for them with Firefox whereas it did not with Internet Explorer. Not a problem for me because I have a Mac.

So I deleted the books from my amazon acct. How do I get them off my ipod Touch where they are archived? They are still listed even though they are off my amazon acct.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. That is interesting. I just checked my Touch, and the deleted books do not show on the Touch so am not sure why yours are still there. Check yours again, and if they still show, try restarting the Touch by holding down the Home button and sleep button at the same time. I only say that because I find that many problems on electronic devices seem to solve themselves with a restart.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your help! :)
DeleteIt doesn't work for my iPhone either. They are deleted on my kindle page, but still show up in my archive. I'm not sure what to do, because now that they have been deleted you can't re-delete them. I have reset the iPhone, and deregistered my account a few times. Nothing seems to be working! :(
ReplyDeleteI don't know about the iPhone but they went away after doing the "Sync and Check for Items" option on my Kindle.
ReplyDeleteI have done all these steps - multiple times - and it is still showing up.
ReplyDeleteIt is on the Archived items page on my pc Kindle reader, it is in the Archived items on my Kindle, and it is in the Archived items on the itouch. wtf!
It is not showing in my Amazon account anymore - but that is not where my concern is. I don't want it showing up in the archives.
I, like others, want to be able to let me kids use my Kindle or the Kindle reader on the PC.
HELP!
I discovered that little arrow too, but it did not delete the titles on my Kindle, nor has my last book showed up on my kindle. In the "orders" box, it says it has been delivered. There is a history box over to the right that says it is pending.
ReplyDeleteSomeone mentioned "syncing" your Kindle--does that mean turning it on, or is there another step?
To sync your Kindle, be sure the wireless is turned on. Go to your Home page, push the Menu button. Select Sync & check for items.
ReplyDeleteSame here. I went online to manage my kindle and deleted some books, but they are still in the archives of my iPhone. I uninstalled the Kindle app for iPhone and reinstalled it and they are still there. I also deregistered the iphone and reregistered it and they are still there. Very frustrating. Any ideas? Is there a way to go into the iPhone and delete the archived books?
ReplyDeleteI just restarted my kindle, I was having the same problem and and going down this list reading what you guys wrote I decided to do what Mary said, and everything is working for me.
DeleteMy deleted books do not show in the archive on my iPhone so, a question for those of you whose deleted books are still there: Have you tried restarting your phone? This can solve all kinds of difficulties. It's not technically a restart but rather you power off the phone completely, and then power it back on again. It's not something we think of to do, because it sleeps so if you have forgotten how, hold down the sleep button until the message "Slide to power off" appears on the screen. Do that, and after the screen goes black, hold that button down again until the Apple logo appears to turn it back on. It seems to flush out a lot of difficulties. In the Apple store, they say to do it once a week which I don't always remember, but it can't hurt and it may solve this (and other problems).
ReplyDeleteI just tried this. I powered off the phone and back on again. Then I synced the kindle iPhone app. They are still there.
ReplyDelete1. delete the book on :manage:
ReplyDelete2. delete the app off your phone
3. reinstall the app
4. sync
This worked as in seriously worked. I had deleted the books from my kindle account but same problem as many have recounted. Mine was a samsung tablet though. Well it worked and now i can pass my tablet around. Thank god.
DeleteI am glad they fixed the problem for books. Any idea how to get inactive subscriptions removed from my account? The "+" method doesn't allow me to delete subscriptions. I would like to remove a questionable subscription.
ReplyDeleteI have the iphone and it worked. Do not go to media library to delete them. I did that by mistake the first time. You have to do exactly what her directions say...under manage kindle. Mine are all gone that I deleted following her exact directions.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the help!! Deleting the book from the Amazon website, and then clicking on "Sync & Check for Items" on my Kindle DX did the trick.
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! I've been trying to figure out how to permanently delete a book from my Kindle, for months now. This post was exactly what I needed. Many, many thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteThank You, Thank You, Thank you!!! I walked through the steps you posted after 3 hours of fumbling around. Thanks so much for posting these instructions it worked like a charm! It only took a few minutes.
ReplyDeleteExcellent and very helpful post! Saved me much trouble and stress.
ReplyDeleteI am glad they fixed the problem for books. Any idea how to get inactive subscriptions removed from my account? The "+" method doesn't allow me to delete subscriptions. I would like to remove a past issue of a magazine that somehow got Archived.
ReplyDeletetheres a button on the other side that gives you options and you can click the delete button on that list
DeleteWorked for me, I deleted on the website, hit the refresh button in the kindle app, and the books were gone. Sucks to have them be permanently deleted though. I'd have preferred a box to check on the website that would prevent a book to be synced or shown in any way on the phone until the box was unchecked again.
ReplyDeleteI was so happy to be able to delete unwanted books from my kindle archives. When they still showed up on my iPod Touch Kindle archive list, I just restarted my iPod and they disappeared from the archive list.
ReplyDeleteWant to remove unwanted item from Kindle and Archive and then reload?
ReplyDeleteHere's what I did...
1.
Connected Kindle to laptop and copied file from Kindle documents folder onto folder on drive (creating a backup) then disconnected Kindle from computer.
2.
Deleted unwanted item from Kindle and removed item from Archive (via amazon.com Account / Kindle management page, as described in post above) and sync'ed Kindle. Item no longer in Archive.
3.
Connected Kindle to computer and copied item back into Kindle documents folder.
To see if the returned item would remain on Kindle, I tried sync'ing, restarting from Settings menu, sync'ing again.
So far, item remains on Kindle (but is easily removable).
I don't know if there is a time factor -- just did all this, so you may want to test with truly unwanted item and watch for a day or more.
Additionally, I re-deleted item to see if it showed up in Archive again. It did not.
Hope this helps.
YAY!!! thank you for showing me this!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful. Got some free books that I did not check out well before clicking. Yuck! Don't want them, and did not know how to remove. Thanks again. Nice to know about the moving to PC option as well. :-D
ReplyDeleteMany, many thanks for this - I'd never have worked it out.
ReplyDeleteYour post was a huge help.
THANK YOU. Earlier today i was complaining in the other forum about not being able to delete evil little nasty books. THANK YOU FOR FIXING THIS PROBLEM. Sorry about before, but me and my brother were literally pulling out our hair becuase we could not delete books.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

I have books in my Kindle Archive that I cannot delete because they do not show up on my "Manage Your Kindle" list of "Your Orders" items. Because these books were not in the "Manage Your Kindle" list, I could not use the delete function. This is because they are in your "Trash", not in "Your Orders". Before you can delete them, you need to move them out of "Trash" into "Your Orders". Here is how to do that:
ReplyDelete1. Go to "Your Media Library".
2. On that web page, click on View - Trash.
3. Move items in Trash back into "Your Collection".
4. Go back to "Manage Your Kindle" - where you will see these items in the "Your Orders" list.
5. Now (finally!!!) you can permanently delete each item (as was explained above).
These items will now disappear from your Archived items on Kindle (or on iMac or on iPod). Yay!
I can confirm "Anonymous'" post of August 2, 2010. This worked for me. Move the item from your Trash folder in the "Your Media Library" area back to your collection and then delete it from your "Manage Your Kindle" page.
ReplyDeleteYes, this definitely works, but you have to Synch your Kindle while it is online to remove the items from the Kindle box itself, after you have deleted them on the computer.
ReplyDeleteYou're my hero. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYes! the offending book was in my trash. Moved it back to my orders list and deleted it again and it disappeared from my kindle and my phone! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI just received my Kindle "3" and none of the posted solutions seem to work by removing the titles from the archive on the Kindle itself. Any other suggestions? Haven't been able to find a WORKABLE solution in any forums or by googling the problem online.
ReplyDeleteAre the "fixes" posted in this forum for 3rd generation Kindles?
Re: kindle 3--I have one, and also couldn't seem to remove from kindle archive. However, after removing from my amazon account as noted above, I then did a hard reset on the kindle 3 (by holding power button for 20-30 seconds). When it restarted, the book I had deleted was gone from the kindle 3 archive. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your excellant instructions and all the input from the posters. When you want answers to something I'm finding out this is the way to go. Thanks again all of you!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't get a book off the MacBook Pro Kindle program that I had deleted from Amazon. Sync & check didn't work. But this did:
ReplyDeleteIf the only thing you have on your Kindle is from Amazon, then you may want to try this: On my MacBook Pro I had to deregister the device & select 'remove all content' then re-register it.
Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteFor those of you reading this and nothing has seemed to work for your kindlePC or your ipod touch... follow the advice from the anonymous post on Aug. 10, 2010 at 1:37pm and Sept. 7, 2010 5:43pm BUT WAIT before you get frustrated because you already tried that and it didn't work here is my advice:
ReplyDeleteFollow their advice BUT ALSO when you get to the Manage Your Kindle page and go to the Your Orders section you will see all of your orders listed, starting with the most recent.
SO, when you look at these items you purchased you see a plus sign(+) before the title of the book (on the left side of the screen). Click on that and it will give you the details of the book along with the option to delete this purchase.
Now, you can only do this one at a time -like everyone else has said- and it brings you back to the first page of your purchases every time you are finished deleting but at least it works.
You may also have to wait forEVER for you device to sync but hey you don't have those books on your device anymore -so good trade, I say.
Where is the "trash" to retrieve a book so that I can put it back in my Your Order section and try to delete it from archives permanently?
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU FOR THIS POST!! didnt realize my book was in the trash, and i would have never found that by myself.
ReplyDeleteThere are two areas on Amazon where your purchases are stored. One is the "Manage Your Kindle" page and the other is "Your Media Collection".
ReplyDeleteIf you are having trouble getting a book out of your archived books on your itouch and you are certain it is not listed on the "Manage Your Kindle" page, you have to click around until you find your "Your Media
Library" page.
To find it, go to the initial page of the site (amazon.com), scroll down. It is on the very bottom of the page.
Once you are in the "Your Media Library" page, there is a pull down menu on the top left corner. Pull it down and you have the option "Trash". Click on it.
Once you have exposed the book/books in your trash, check the box of the book(s) you do not want and click the option "Return to Your Collection".
Once you do that, it goes BACK onto your "Manage Your Kindle" page. Now, take the link at the top of the page to "Manage Your Kindle".
NOW it is listed! When you click 'delete', it will finally (and completely) disappear off your itouch kindle app. However, this book(s) are still listed in your "All Orders" area, even though if you want it back on your itouch, you will have to pay for it a second time.
Happy deleting!
Mary, Thank you thank you thank you. You and Anonymous (August) who added that you have to take your stuff out of the trash first- saved me from absolute embarrassment. I downloaded a trashy novel and before I knew it, I couldn't get rid of it. I have a shared account.... Wow thanks!
ReplyDeleteYAY!!! I have been trying to find a solution to this very annoying problem since I got my kindle. Thank you so very much!!
ReplyDeleteI have deleted items this way with great success, however, they are still showing on the "Improve Your Recommendations" page. The help section appears to say that items can not be deleted from this purchase history.
ReplyDeleteCan someone confirm, comment, deny?
Did anyone find a sollution to this problem, where books still show in "Improve Your Recommendations" page after deleting them form the Kindle and Archives?
Deletethanks for the great step-by-step. worked perfectly and was very satisfying for me as well. thanks again.
ReplyDeleteThanks - Worked perfectly for me, managed to get a book that was sitting on my Kindle deleted after months of trying
ReplyDeleteWorked a treat, thanks
ReplyDeleteThis was great advice! I'm a loyal Amazon user but this was erking me out a bit. So thanks for pointing out that they now provide this option - its not advertised anywhere!
ReplyDeleteI'm still having trouble. I deleted the book by using manage your kindle and its gone from my account but it is still showing in archive section of kindle for PC! HELP
ReplyDeleteDo the samples you preview on your kindle show up on your bill??
ReplyDeleteAnd books you have accidently bought but then deleted do they show up on your bill as well! PLEASE ANSWER QUESTION! x
Samples do not show up in your bill.
ReplyDeleteFor each book you buy, whether it is free or paid, you will receive an e-mail with the title and price of the book. If you later delete the book from your account, the amount of the book will show up on your credit card, if you are using one. The title of the book will not. The title only appears in the e-mail you receive as confirmation at the time you buy the book.
If you are using a gift card to fund your account, there is no bill involved, but you will still get the e-mail when you buy a book.
Thank you for being so helpful. This was causing me great stress until I found your site. This made my day better. Sometimes you don't know exactly what you are ordering. This saved me much embarrassment!
ReplyDeleteI found out how to deleted the books by accident directly from your ipod touch. Just go to the screen where your books are listed hold down the title and move it to the right and a delete button will pop up. Hit the delete button and another confirmation window will pop up.
ReplyDeleteYou can delete them directly from your ipod. Just hold down the book title and move it to the right and a delete button will pop up.
ReplyDeleteOh thank goodness. It worked... Come on Kindle... Great product, but this should be a easy fix. I followed the directions from the first post...They are gone. Make sure you sync though.. It is like magic.
ReplyDeleteThat is briliant - thanks! Saved from much embarassment
ReplyDeleteMy hero!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteI understand from your great instructions how to remove a book. Any idea about how to remove pages and pages of newspaper daily issues from the Archives? I do not want to stop the daily subscription, but these back issues are a lot of trouble to go through to find a book! I share a Kindle account so I do use the archives.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous from February 11, 2011: I assume from your question that you have the original Kindle, the one most of us refer to as K1. In that one, as I remember, in the Content Manager, the back issues of newspapers and periodicals were all mixed up with the books. If so, I don't know how to make them go away. On the K2 and K3, periodicals have their own separate archive and unless you have specifically marked an issue as one to keep, they will even disappear from the periodical archive after 7 days, so they do not get in the way of your books.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you who've got books stuck in your archive after you've deleted them from your account, this worked for me:
ReplyDelete1. Deregister the device on your Amazon Account.
2. When you open up Kindle on the device you were having problems with, it'll ask you to register it. Go ahead and register it.
3. Go "Home" and then go to "Tools" on the menu and select "Sync and check for new items."
This worked for me. I hope it works for you
I was given my Kindle as a gift from my husband years ago. The account was always in my husband's name and so was the card used for purchases. I would like to delete some items from my archives. I've deregistered my Kindle and put it in my name and used my card. Now, I have no history to delete on Amazon. Is there really no way to delete items from your archives through the Kindle itself? Will I have to use my husband's Amazon account to do this? (I'd rather not involve him at all!)
ReplyDeleteFINALLY! It worked like a charm and the books that I never want to see again are G-O-N-E. Thank you SO much! :)
ReplyDeleteI would like the echo the same comments, thank you so much the archives that I want gone, are now gone!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post...thanks for all the discussion everyone. It was very helpful!
ReplyDeleteYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!
ReplyDeleteFINALLY!
THANK YOU!!!!!
Went through all of the steps. This does not work. The books are on my Kindle, but not on the Manage Kindle page. I re-synched, etc. They are still there. Not helpful at all.
ReplyDeletei followed steps then syced worked perfectly thanks xx
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU LADY FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!! OH THANK YOU A BILLION TIMES!!! :-) I would get sooooooooo frusterated when I couldn't do it. I thought I'd be stuck with them forever. I did exactly waht you said. but they went away AFTER I turned my phone ofrf (Samsung Captivate) and turned it back on, then i synced and no more bad books!!!! :-) THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!! From, Jenny, 35, Knoxville, TN
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for your step-by-step guide. It was kind of you to take the time to put this post together. It worked perfectly. All the best to you.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I had quite a few free books that I hated having to see in my archive, and this removed them.
ReplyDeleteWorked for me - thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteI can't thank you all enough! I had about 75 books that I had read in my Kindle Archives on my Samsung Galaxy Tab that I could not get rid of. I had read the instruction book - useless in this instance. The tech support site for the Tab wanted $28 to answer my question! Forget it. Then I found this site.
ReplyDeleteI went to the Kindle Store on my Tab. Down at the bottom in the column on the right was a Manage Your Account line. It took me to my Kindle library.
As you mentioned, each book was listed according to date ordered. On the far right of each entry was an "Actions" block. I clicked on it. Then clicked on "Delete from Library". Then clicked on "yes" when the new box popped up.
I had to wait a bit while it went through the delete process for each book. You can't delete more than one book at a time. Make sure to wait until it has finished deleting that book before doing another one.
When I finished deleting the books in this fashion I checked my Kindle Archives. Yes! They had been deleted from my Tab! Thank you!
Hi. I simply can't remove archived books from iPad2 Kindle app. My Amazon account shows that I have only the American dictionary (which everyone else has). It doesn't show the archived books. I don't have a 'delete' button anywhere at all on the kindle app. When I swipe the book it comes up with 'archive' but no option to 'delete'. When I go to Amazon, nothing shows up (apart from dictionary). Thanks for any help.
ReplyDeleteI rang Kindle and asked them and they said it cant be done, I wanted them removed because I didnt want to keep books on that would just clog up the memory!!! however as I have just bought my daughter one I definitely dont want her to read everything I read...thanks to you i have now deleted permanently all the books I dont want, THAKYOU
ReplyDeleteThank you to everyone who has contributed advice and suggestions to this blog. Although my problems were not immediately resolved, nonetheless, it was very comforting to know that I wasn't alone in making unintended purchases of an item. I only started using kindle (for laptop/PC) two days ago, so until now I was totally ignorant about the pitfalls. I would like to share my experience on this page because someone else might find it useful. Firstly, I will explain the uniqueness of the problem I encountered while trying to remove a particular book from the virtual library (under: all items and also from the archive).
ReplyDeleteBefore discovering this blog, I had actually managed to delete the unwanted item from Amazon website (Your Account, manage your kindle). The deletion worked so well that the book image or title was not visible in the Media Library or Manage Your Kindle aspect of my account on the Amazon website. Initially, I was pleased with the result of the deletion. However, the total eradication prevented me from following the steps that had been explained by other kindle users. I was stuck with the image of the book in two different places of the virtual library shelf, but it could not be traced in my account, except for the billing page – but that information was not useful.
Although it was visible on the screen it couldn’t be opened as it root sources had already been removed from the website.
I called Amazon this morning, I’m glad to say I received an excellent help, these are the steps he took me through:
1) I open the kindle app – which will take you to the virtual shelf
2) Click on tool, select options and then.....
3) Click on registration
4) Click on deregister; finally this removed the book from the virtual shelf and archive.
5) I was then asked to close the kindle app, and re-open it again. When I re-loaded the kindle asked for my email address and password, which is the same you would use in the Amazon website.
I was amazed and absolutely relieved that the problem had been resolved with these five simply instructions. And also the rest of my books were left intact without anyone of them being deleted as well.
Good luck to anyone that may encounter this problem, try the steps described, if not call Amazon.
What if they keep showing up on your kindle? I deleted them but they won't go away, even if I sync!!! Frustrating!
ReplyDeleteThis does work but you have to follow the instructions exactly as they're written. If you simply put an x in the box and deleted the book is in your trash and that's why it is still showing on your kindle. Take it out of the trash and follow the instructions exactly as they're written. This was soooooo helpful thank you!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I can finally share my kindle with other folk :-)
ReplyDeleteMajor thank you, very handy to know how to delete items! Originally they didn't disappear from my archives but I found the answer in the comments (sync & check) and that fixed it. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteHad the same problem. Deleted it thru "Managing Your Kindle" website but it persisted in Archived Items. The trick I realized was this -
ReplyDeleteI had to go to "Your collection" from "Your Account". There was a trash folder there. The book i really wanted gone was there. I put it back in the collection. Went back to "Manage your Kindle" and then deleted it again. On my devise i did a synch again and it was gone for good.
Thank you so much for your step-by-step instructions! That "Sync & Check for Items" step was the missing piece of the puzzle for me.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your help. Those unwanted books are now gone for good!!
ReplyDeleteVery Helpful
This worked OK for me once I had 'synced' - a worthwhile post which will no doubt be read for years to come....
ReplyDeletetrevorholcroft.me
To delete magazine/newspaper subscriptions editions on your kindle and in your kindle archive if you click left on the navigation button you should get a 'remove from device' or 'delete' option. This seemed to remove all old copies of newspaper subs that I had, but doesn't work for books as this would just dump them in my archive. To delete books you need to follow the instructions above (i.e. go to your account on Amazon, drop down the + options and remove from device that way and then synch).
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but will someone give me step-by-step instructions for my predicament?
ReplyDelete1. I only have one thing that needs deletion.
2. It is on my Kindle, in my archives folder.
3. I downloaded it via my Kindle's internet connection - I never was on amazon.com.
4. Because of this, it doesn't say that I've downloaded anything.
5. I've downloaded 19 things in the past hour - free stuff like Shakespeare and Bronte.
To sum up, I have one archived item that does not appear on my MANAGE MY KINDLE page or anywhere at all on the amazon.com website. It IS though on my kindle. I cannot get rid of it.
Someone? Please tell me how to get rid of it?
Lastly, I tested a few things. I downloaded on amazon a copy of Pride and Prejudice. I deleted it on my Kindle. It went to the archives file. I deleted it on my Manage my kindle page. I resynced. I restarted.
Nothing. It's still there, in my archives.
PLEASE? ANYONE?
The issue is one of wanting to delete books from your kindle & not wanting them to show up in your archive list for any number of reasons. The only way I have been able to do that is a convoluted process.
ReplyDelete1) I installed 2 programs on my computer
A) Kindle for PC
B) Calibre - An e-book management software
Whenever I buy a book from amazon I i go to manage my kindle. Then I go the book and click on actions and choose download & transfer via usb.
I then have it sent to kindle for pc. From there I import it to the Calibre program & convert it to a MOBI file.
Next I go to the Calibre Library & right click on the book(s) properties there will be two of them, one an AZW file the other a MOBI file. I delete the AZW file.
Then I plug my kindle touch in via USB cord then copy & paste the book (MOBI Version) to the documents folder of my kindle.
You'll find that when you want to remove the book it will give you the option to "delete this book" instead of move to archive.
The great thing about this is that it you can delete it & never have it show up on the archive list while still having the Mobi version in your Calibre Library & the original version in you Kindle Library.
As I said convoluted, but if I ever download a book that's not age appropriate for a young reader I don't have to worry about that person seeing those titles. All in all it solves many privacy issues. I hope that helps!
Hardcore, thank you 5000 stars, whatever. This worked to perfection and got all that annoying buildup right off. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
ReplyDeleteOn your kindle hold finger over title you want to delete until menu comes up....there will be a delete option
ReplyDeleteI accidently downloded an unwanted book, (mum very x 20 angry) if I delete it (not my account) will she find out, in ANY way?
ReplyDelete-Anomynous teenager
Mary, thank you so much. Good to see that I'm not the only one! Your instructions worked perfectly: delete from Kindle, delete in Amazon 'Manage Your Kindle' page, sync and check for items on Kindle. All gone!
ReplyDeleteVery helpful post, and thanks again.
Thank you, this is a great guide!
ReplyDeleteReally useful guide as concerned that after "Manage my Kindle" on Mmazon items still showing on Kindle home page Just done sync... and now items vanished from archive history Many thanks John
ReplyDeleteFor those with trouble deleting from ipod touch etc, simply slide finger across item....slide right to left to show delete button, slide left to right to show archive button
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for showing me how to permanently remove books from my kindle.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I thought I would never be able to get rid of them.
ReplyDeleteUhhmm...Sooo...I'm a little bit confused...
ReplyDeleteA few months ago, I was able to sell on of my books from my Kindle account on Amazon. I got the whole 3.99 back. But the option said "sell", if my memory serves me right. Now it says "permanently remove" Will I still get the money back?
I had to get The Great Gatsby for a class. Now we're done, and I don't want to think about it anymore and it was like 12 dollars....which in my measly teenager-budget, is a lot. Thanks in advance! :D
i really need help!!!!!! how do you clear your purchase history? coz i accidentaly bought some books and want to clear them all together! how do i get rid of them under purchase history???????
ReplyDeleteThank you soooooo much! I started reading a book on the CIA and didn't know how much more inappropriate it could get...books these days...you ask for action and they give you "the other stuff." Anyways, I wanted to delete it and it worked like a charm. Thanks a million!
ReplyDeleteMake sure the book you want to delete are in the homepage of your kindle, click left on the 5 way controller and delete it that way ;)
ReplyDeleteKayc, I think you have not followed the discussion here. The whole point is that while this will remove the book from the Kindle itself, it will remain on your Amazon account and in the Kindle archive. You need to remove it from Amazon or it will always appear as an 'archived item' on the device.
ReplyDeleteYay!!! Got rid of them at last - Thank you one and all .
ReplyDeleteHow does one clear the purchase history?
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary McManus! That did the trick - items gone from the archive folder on my Kindle :D
ReplyDeleteIf you buy a sample for a book will it show up on your account? ?
ReplyDeleteSamples for books will not show up in your archive, but if you then buy the book, that will be in your archive. At that point, delete the sample from your Kindle.
DeleteSample for books shows up under on your amazon kindle account.. Manage my kindle..Pending deliveries..view recent successful deliveries..I have no idea how to delete them from there as there's no option..
DeleteTHANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apparently you have to pay close attention when downloading free books yuck
ReplyDeleteHow can I remove a Word document sent to the Kindle e-mail account from my daughter's Kindle Archive? There is no delete option on the Kindle itself, and even though I deleted it from the device using the Kindle software on my laptop, it is still stubbonly showing in archive. I don't want her to read this document due to its content - I don't even know what it's doing there!!!! If she clicks on it, it will automatically downloads and open.
ReplyDeleteTo remove the Word document, go to your account, Manage your Kindle, and under personal documents, delete it from there. It will no longer be in anyone's archives. As far as I know, it will still stay on YOUR Kindle, but if you delete it from there, it will be gone forever. Remember in your Kindle as a the future that anything you send to personal document now shows up in your archive so that other people on your account also have access to it. This is OK if you WANT this to happen, but not if you wish to keep it private.
DeleteWell, the problem has solved itself, as when I got home I told her to synch it to her own laptop. She plugged it in, deregistered it from me (as my 3rd Kindle) and registered it in her own name and to her own Amazon account. Once she'd synched, all the archive books and documents had gone as they weren't on her own Kindle account.
ReplyDeleteSo, if she wants any of the books she had before back (they're all on my Kindle account), I think the best bet is to copy them onto a memory stick and copy them from there straight onto the Kindle.
You cannot copy Kindle books from one Kindle to another. Each download is coded to a specific Kindle. Only people on the same account can share books unless a book is loanable. If it is, you can only loan it once for 14 days.
ReplyDeleteHow do you delete purchase history? Under books you own?
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by "delete purchase history? Under books you own?" Your question is not clear. If you permanently delete a book, the history of its purchase is also gone. Is that what you meant?
DeleteIts not gone its there still I asked kindle and they said it was for their purchase history so deleting a book does'nt remove it from purchase history..I'm trying to find out how to delete sample books under the heading pending ..all the sample books I've read but not bought are there..so annoying
DeleteThank you Mary, Your suggestions were spot on.
ReplyDeleteA lot of comments here, I haven't read them all so I'm not sure whether this has already been covered...
ReplyDeleteMy problem was that although I had permanently removed some books from my Amazon Kindle Library and they were not currently downloaded on my iPhone 3 Kindle app, they were still showing up in the cloud view on my phone.
I resolved this by both uninstalling the app from my phone AND de-registering the phone from my Amazon Kindle account and then re-installing the app on my phone. Problem gone.
when trying to delete a book from my archives section, I cannot see any + sign on the book title as described by Mary McManus. Can anybody help ?
ReplyDeleteTo Anonymous from 4/29/12: After going to your Amazon account on the computer, the plus sign is right in front of the book title in Manage Your Kindle. It shows information about book cost etc. To permanently delete your book, now you use the dropdown arrow next to Actions (to the right of the book title) and select Delete from Library.
ReplyDeleteI have done this but the books still appear in my orders, the books no longer appear on my kindle or archived items any more but I really need to get ride of them from the my order bit. Any ideas how to do that?!
DeleteI have an old issue of the New York Times Book Review that will not auto-delete. It moves to my Archive. If I move it back to my Kindle (keyboard), it appears as a back issue flagged to be deleted. In a few days, it shows up in my Archive again. The Manage My Kindle page on the web does not list individual issues of periodicals, so I can't remove this one issue from there. Any ideas?
ReplyDeletebdepamph, the only times this has happened to me, deleting from the device took care of the problem. If it pops up in your archive again, I can only suggest that you just ignore it. Very weird!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your reply. That issue eventually disappeared; now two other issues are doing it! I'll try to ignore it (but it's like an itch...)
DeleteThanks to Anonymous August 16, 2011 2:33 AM. The only way I would get rid of that archived stuff was to deregister and re-register. Now, if I could just get rid of all the pending deliveries that are there for no reason on my amazon account....
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for all of these comments. I can't believe Samsung has not fixed this issue by now. But this blog and everyone's comments saved me a ton of time.
ReplyDeleteI wanteed my books available for my new kindle so getting rid of them on amazon site not an option. I took some time in "archives" and downloaded each book back to my kindle reader home page. then i hooked up the hard drive and deleted straight from the book folder on the Kindle reader. They got loaded again in archives. 1/2 hour wasted. Since the kindle is going to my child I deregistered and opened and account for him with a gift certificate
ReplyDeleteWell hello to you all... I was following all the steps to delete the books on my Kindle account and for some reason some would get sent to the archives. This got me so pissed off, that I decided to deregister and reregister and naturally the books I had not read yet were lost but put in the archives. I then went to my kindle account on Amazon and deleted the list there...
ReplyDeleteFrom now on I'll just make sure that I'll download books one at a time and once I've read it, I'll deregister to make sure it does not go to the
archives.
I deleted all the unwanted books some months ago ,but now suddenly, after i posted some reviews for other books on amazon, i received an email with a list of the same "naughty" :P books asking to
ReplyDelete"Review your other purchases ".
They are no where to find beside on the page "Review Your Purchases " and there is no delete or remove button at that place.Anyone found a solution for this problem?
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!! This helped me a lot. I cant believe it was that easy!
ReplyDeleteThank you, I have just purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and was wondering how to do this. I went into my Amazon a/c and deleted the books but they were still on my tab so I uninstalled the Kindle app, turned the tab off and back on then reinstalled the app. Ma seem long winded but the books have finally gone.
ReplyDeleteThank you for that very useful info. Just got my Kindle second hand as my son upgraded his and passed his old one (6 months) on to me, needed to get rid of all his crap. Been bothering me for days even after re-registering was still left with some of his crap. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteI have 2 kindles, the books I read show up on the 2nd kindle how can I get the book listing off the 2nd kindle?
ReplyDeleteSince I don't know which model Kindle is your second Kindle, I cannot tell you specifically how to delete it. If you want books to go to a particular Kindle, see the drop down menu before you click the Buy button and choose the one it should go to.
DeleteUG!! I've looked everywhere, but there isn't a plus next to the title for my "Your Orders" section. Am I looking in the right place?
ReplyDeleteGo to Manage your Kindle and wait for the items to load completely. To the far right of each title is a dropdown box called Actions. Click on the arrow of that box and select Delete from library.
DeleteJust followed the original instructions from Mary at the top of the blog especially the "sync" feature - all books now gone, also changed the recommendations and tracking features via the Amazon website - all gone, hopefully permanently!! Thanks for your help
ReplyDeletethis was so helpful. downloaded some naughty books, as they were free, without realising, my daughters use my kindle all the time.. so needed to delete them super quick.
ReplyDeletethank you!!!!
